Inunaki is one of the creepiest places in Japan. There are many legends about this village, from unusable electronic devices in this area, to the villagers’ isolation from the outside world, willing to kill, cannibalize, incest without being subject to any form of punishment because all Japanese constitutions and laws are not applicable here. Even the tunnel leading into the village has happened many brutal murders. So the Japanese government did not recognize this place on the map.
And in Howling Village, the main character Morita Kanae must go to this village to learn the mysterious deaths happening around Morira’s house, and rescue his brothers. It sounds like a hell of a horror. Because after Aokigahara suicide forest, we continue to witness another famous haunted place on the big screen. Not to mention the director of Howling Village is Takashi Shimizu – the father of the Ju-on legend, so I was looking forward to it a lot. But reality is not like a dream, the more hope is the more disappointed.
Howling Village got off to a good start with the murky, creepy scenery of the deep, rocky tunnel and abandoned houses. Add to that the “From this place onwards, the Japanese constitution will not apply” dog-like howl, the name Inunaki (Dog-Dog barking) as a warning to those I dare to invade Inunaki village.
But curiosity is human nature, so Morita’s eldest son Yuma and his girlfriend Akina came here to take photos of the village. They immediately encountered mysterious phenomena and had to flee in extreme fear. Since returning, Akina has been possessed. She kept singing outrageous melodies: “The dogs rode on the girls. They wanted to seal them off… ”and eventually committed suicide by jumping from the power pole to the ground. When I came here, I thought that Kanae would learn about Inunaki afterwards and uncover the awful mysteries of the village. Motif is like that but Howling Village is a turning point that I can not foresee.
Of course, the film still has horror moments like a close-up segment of Akina’s body when falling from above. His arms and legs were twitching, his blood was red from his head, and the street was dyed red, his eyes wide open and still terrified. This passage certainly made many young people cry silently. However, only a few small swallow wings can not make spring. The name of the movie is known as the Village of Death, but how can viewers see the villages. At the beginning, they were able to visit each washroom and glance at a room, Yuma and Akina were scared to death.
Most of the movie time is around the hospital where Kanae works, the Morita family, the Hayato Nakamura family – Kanae’s grandfather and on the road. Until the end of the movie, the audience can see the village scene but only through a blurry blurry video. It is difficult to understand when the film clearly has a place could not be better, but did not focus on exploiting it. I think the movie might have to change its name to Tunnel of Death as well, so the tunnel is more favored than the village itself.
Not only the context, but also the movie content is increasingly far away from Inunaki village. At first, it was true about a haunted village, but suddenly stopped driving to Kanae’s journey to find parents for her grandmother ??? The movie raises a lot of issues about Mr. Akira Morita saying his wife has bad blood, and then the warning of Dr. Yamanobe to Mr. Akira: “You know what we have done before.”, And then rumors about Inunaki village but resolving everything in one minute with only the old video.
It turned out that Inunaki villagers used to live by hunting wild dogs. One day, a group of people got close to the villagers and then quickly revealed their evil nature. They are the people of the power company, who want to destroy the village to build a hydroelectric lake. This group detained the women and then spread rumors that they had sex with the dogs. Finally, the whole village was engulfed in water.
This story matches the mirror of the 1947 electric company that Yuma found when he first came to Inunaki and the phenomenon of the dead had watery lungs. The head of the power company is the previous ancestor of the Morita family. And through her grandfather’s story, Kanae gradually realized that her grandmother was a resident of Inunaki village, and her ability to see her soul was hereditary. So we have an irony story like a Korean romance film, the descendants of the Morita family who married the offspring of Inunaki village, who carried the blood of dog killers. But I still wonder how Mr. Akira knew the origin of Ayano’s wife, because from the beginning he kept talking about the blood of his wife. To be honest, I still expect more sensational secrets. After all, I only had to listen to all the hearing in the end, but it was only related to the hydroelectric lake, so it was a bit of a failure. And it seems that in order to not betray the electricity company that has worked to spread rumors, the women in the village suddenly turned dogs as well ??? From Ayano to Maya, whenever she gets angry, she is ready to take the crane to deal with others. That’s not to mention the film also spread to unrelated events. Typically the appearance of Dr. Yamanobe, the family of Kanae’s patient boy.
At first, I thought that seeing Kanae’s ghost mother was just an introduction to Kanae’s special ability. But the fact that this ghost continued to appear gradually made the film’s circuit diluted when frankly, this character has no role at all. And the best banana is the scriptwriter gives the audience a slot on the time machine to travel back to the past with Kenji Narimiya – a stranger from the sky. The name of this character was when I wrote the article online, but when I watched the movie, I was completely blind. Kanae had only seen Kenji once when she was a child at her grandmother’s house and later in the video, but when Kenji suddenly appeared and told her to go to the same place, Kanae also followed ?? ? Why trust people so? Knowing that grandma had told him not to harm her before, he had to be a little wary. Even if his appearance remained the same after all these years, it didn’t make her wonder. Fortunately, this guy took her to see the last video of Inunaki, but if Kenji was a haunt, Kanae would have long gone.
And then the scene that everyone expected, Kanae came to Inunaki village after receiving a phone call for help from Yuma and her younger brother Kota. If you wonder if there is still any truth to be exposed or expect more scare scenes, the answer is nothing. Even for me, this is a drop of water that spills the glass when this segment has pushed the ugly level of the film to the climax.
First is the eldest son of the Morita family. Yuma and Akina came to Inunaki village, but only Akina was possessed, and Yuma remained unharmed. I thought anyone who came to the village was cursed, now it turned out to be a selective revenge? This boy is very happy, but he doesn’t know what he is, so he insists on going back to Inunaki to get revenge for his girlfriend, then he has to use help to call relatives.
Next is the youngest Kota. I had a strong physique to predict that I was going to elementary school, but I did not understand how the school would assign the students to learn about the haunted village. Kota is a good student, determined to finish the homework to the end. So when Yuma returned to Inunaki village, Kota hid in the car and was then arrested with his brother. Kanae’s rescue mission was also surprisingly simple when Kenji instructed her to take the place and fortunately, she encountered a guard dog too sleepy. Surrounded by loud noises, there were even strangers walking in front of him who were still sleeping peacefully. There is no cinnamon ghost in the house, but only a girl named Maya has just given birth. So Kanae immediately took on the duties of the carrier with Kenji’s plea: “Save our children.” And apparently to increase the difficulty for the game, the Morita siblings decided to ignore the rules of survival to survive in horror movies. It is known that half-loved Maya is chasing after her children without worrying about running for fast, and she still stands still to watch the dog transformed. Honestly, I wanted to stand up in the middle of the theater and shouted, “My God, don’t worry about running and you’re still standing there”, but the three characters still stayed there and screamed all kinds of things. Perhaps Yuma heard my heart, so he made a sacrifices of sacrifice by rushing to hold Maya and Kenji together. That kid can guess who it is, right? It was Kanae’s grandmother, who was found in front of Nakamura’s house in the past. In the end, Kenji and Maya’s ashes were buried with her grandmother’s grave, and Kanae saw the 3 of them smiling at her and the movie ended. The ending is good, but wait, what about the village? We are watching the Village of Death, why did it suddenly turn into a program like Never Hated a Separation? And since Kanae had found her grandmother, everything seemed to be resolved. Mr. Akira is also much gentler to his wife, not to mention good blood and bad blood anymore. No one in the family was cursed. Even the ghost of the patient’s mother was surprisingly friendly, she also greeted Kanae and accepted the escape. So magical. Just kidding, this is like telling Kenji and Maya to be the source of everything. So that is to say, the reputation is a movie about the village but did not see the silhouette anywhere. Still have to study Mr. Hai in Kim Lan’s short story a lot. Perhaps this is why the film only received 5.3 / 10 on IMDb, but for me this point is still high.
In short, don’t wait too much for the advertisement from the horror film director Ju-on series’ poster to do anything. Because Takashi Shimizu may have created the Ju-on legend, but that does not mean that every movie made by Takashi Shimizu can become a legend. If people ask me how I feel after watching Howling Village, my answer will be that the movie has an all-handsome, all-star cast.
